Black Locust Honey — Northern Kentucky's Spring Flow

Sat Nov 15 2025 00:00:00 GMT+0000 (Coordinated Universal Time)

If you keep bees in Northern Kentucky, you live and die by the Black Locust flow. Robinia pseudoacacia blooms for a narrow window in late April through mid-May in ZIP 41018, typically peaking around the first week of May. When it's on, strong colonies can cap frames faster than any other time of year. When it rains for two weeks straight and you miss the flow entirely, it's a hard season.

What Makes Black Locust Honey Different

Black Locust honey is water-white to pale gold when fresh — lighter than most other honey you'll find at a local market. It's mild, floral, and almost sweetly perfumed compared to the darker, earthier fall honeys from goldenrod and aster. It resists crystallization better than most varietals, which makes it popular with customers who prefer honey that stays liquid. European producers sell it as Acacia honey and it commands premium prices for exactly this reason.

When Does It Bloom?

In zone 6a/6b (ZIP 41018), Black Locust blooms approximately:

The bloom window per tree is short — usually 10–14 days — but trees at different elevations and aspects bloom in succession, extending the total forage window to 2–3 weeks across the landscape.

Signs the Flow Is On

Colonies during a strong Black Locust flow are unmistakable: heavy pollen loads coming in, a sweet vanilla-like smell around the entrance, frames building out fast, and bees fanning hard to evaporate nectar. Watch for capped honey that hasn't fully cured — Black Locust nectar is thin and needs time to reduce. Always check moisture with a refractometer before extracting. Target under 18.5%.

How We Work the Flow

We make sure supers are on before the flow begins — a colony caught without room will swarm, and you lose both the bees and the crop. We also wait until late June before extracting, giving the honey full time to cure even after capping.
